ATM bombed in Pretoria shopping centre
Police have launched a manhunt after about 13 armed men bombed an ATM inside a financial service shop at the Attlyn Shopping Centre in Pretoria.
Police spokesperson Major Mack Mngomezulu said the men bombed an ATM at about 9am on Tuesday, Rekord Centurion reported.
“The suspects entered the mall and went into the store. They threatened staff members, disarmed the security and told everyone to lie down on the floor. They then proceeded to bomb the ATM inside the store. The suspects took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the scene in three different vehicles,” added Mngomezulu.
“As they were fleeing, they fired shots into the air. No one was injured, and no arrests have been made,” he said.
In a separate incident, two ATMs were bombed in the Free State in March.
An armed gang of 15 people arrived at the Standard Bank ATM on Bok Street at 3.28am in a white Mercedes-Benz and a Toyota Yaris, said Captain Stephen Thakeng.
They used an explosive device to bomb the ATM and took cash, added Thakeng.
“The other ATM was bombed at 1.50am when four people armed with automatic rifles arrived at a petrol station in Kutloanong in a white Mercedes-Benz arrived and held up petrol attendants.
“An undisclosed amount of cash was robbed. Then the four suspects walked towards an ATM, explosive devices were used to bomb it, and cash was also stolen,” said Thakeng.
