An attempted murder suspect (40) who was last week disarmed by community members from kwaShikishela near Mtubatuba, KZN, has died in hospital.

Police spokesperson Captain Sbusiso Mkhize says the suspect, who was due to appear in court when released from hospital, succumbed to assault injuries on Saturday.

“A murder investigation is underway,” adds Mkhize.

The man was subdued and disarmed by community members after he allegedly shot a resident. Police arrived at the scene to find the suspect, who was in possession of an unlicensed firearm, had sustained injuries.

“The suspect had a conflict with the victim, which led to him drawing a firearm and shooting the victim,” Mkhize said at the time of the incident.

“The victim was assisted by community members and the suspect disarmed. Both the suspect and the victim were taken to the clinic for medical attention. The suspect was then arrested and charged with attempted murder and unlawful possession of a firearm.”

Acting uMkhanyakude District SAPS commissioner Brigadier Mandla Mhlongo expressed his appreciation to the community for assisting the police.
