Bakkie ‘drives off’ after hitting Gauteng boy on bicycle
An eyewitness alleges he confronted the driver of the vehicle who denied any knowledge of the incident.
A 16-year-old boy was injured when he was hit by a white GWM bakkie in Monument Park in Pretoria, Gauteng, yesterday just after 17:00.
Eye witnesses say the vehicle was driving erratically before the incident and that the driver did not stop after hitting Adolph Krúger, who was cycling back home from nearby garage.
Devon Janse van Rensburg, who was driving behind the vehicle in question, saw the incident happen.
“I was driving behind him for six or seven kilometres, he was swerving all over the road. A bunch of times he even went off the road and back on.”
Van Rensburg says that the bakkie did try to avoid the bicycle and hit Krúger from the side before driving away from the scene.
“He went face first into the tar, and then the bakkie drove away,” says Van Rensburg.

Van Rensburg, who was able to identify the driver of the vehicle, confronted the man at his home.
“The man said he didn’t know anything about [the accident].”
Mother grateful son is not seriously injured
Adolph’s mother, Adel, says that she is grateful that her son did not sustain any life-threatening injuries.
“His face was badly bruised; his upper lip is bad, and the skin on his chin was grazed off. His hands are badly bruised, and his one elbow is very sore. He has body aches as well. But luckily, he doesn’t seem to have any head injuries.
Kruger says she is grateful that the worst did not happen, although her son’s wounds will take time to heal.
She was at work when the accident happened when her son told her over the phone that he was hit by a car while riding his bicycle.
“I can’t even remember why I was phoning him, but when he answered, he said, ‘Mom, a car hit me, dad is here. We are looking for the guy, he doesn’t want to come out of his house’. It was a terrible feeling. He never rides on the road. He always rides on the pavement,” says Kruger.
A docket was opened at Lyttelton Police Station and police are currently investigating the matter.
