Bloodbath at Mpumalanga drinking spot

After-hours socialising turned fatal on the weekend when gunmen opened fire on a group of people.

Two men were killed and seven others wounded when an unknown number of attackers opened fire on a group while they were socialising in Alexandria, Mpumalanga, on Saturday.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala says the incident occurred at about 02:25.

Police and paramedics were called to the premises, where two people were certified dead. The seven wounded victims were rushed to hospital, he says.

“A preliminary investigation indicates that an unidentified number of gunmen opened fire on the victims, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds.”

Mohlala explains that one of the victims was fatally shot inside a car, while the other deceased was found lying on the ground. The injured were found scattered around the premises. The motive for the shooting is not yet known.

He says high-calibre firearms could have been used. Evidence found at the scene included eight empty rifle cartridges and six empty cartridges for a 9mm pistol. The items were seized and will form part of the probe.

Mohlala says allegations of illegal liquor trading will also be investigated.

No arrests have been made.

Police have urged anyone with information that may assist in apprehending the gunmen to call the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111, or send information via the MySAPS App.
