As the drug turf war in the Wentworth area of Durban continues to leave bloodshed in its violent path, with the sound of bullets flying through the community becoming a normal part of life for residents, a call is being made for urgent change.

The murder of alleged Hollywood gang member Lance Majority, who was shot and killed in Arne Crescent in Montclair on Sunday, sparked further sporadic shootings in the Wentworth area – causing widespread concern as to when the bloodshed will end.

Tracy Williams, a community leader working with police and role-players to enhance safety in the Wentworth area, says urgent intervention is needed.

“We are forced to live our lives in fear of the next shooting, which can occur any time of the day or night. Every day, we jump at the sound of gunshots. We send out warnings on social media groups so that people can safeguard themselves and their children, but this is not enough as numerous innocent people have either been injured or killed during shootings.

“The Community Policing Forum needs to work with and assist the police. We cannot continue to live in fear of our lives and the lives of our children,” Williams pleas.

Community activist Celeste King yesterday joined residents to handover a memorandum to station commander of the Wentworth Police Station, with hopes that the area will be swept clean of corrupt police officers and gangs.
