Boksburg woman allegedly tries to bribe ‘cable thief’ boyfriend out of jail

She, together with three men suspected of cable theft, appeared in court yesterday.

Three men were arrested after they were on Thursday, allegedly found travelling in a marked security vehicle, with suspected stolen copper cables and aluminium weighing 26kg.

The trio, set to have their first court in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday, had a fourth suspect added to the list after one of their girlfriends allegedly attempted to bribe police officers to let him go.

According to Reiger Park SAPS spokesperson Constable Johannes Msimanga, officers conducting a stop-and-search operation in Main Reef Road near Ulana informal settlement pulled over a suspicious silver Mitsubishi Triton bakkie.

The bakkie bore the name of a security company believed to be appointed by the metro to protect energy infrastructure.

“Upon searching the vehicle, officers found suspected stolen goods and the occupants of the vehicle failed to give satisfactory answers about the ownership thereof.

“They were arrested and charged with possession of suspected stolen copper cables,” says Msimanga.

“A woman believed to be one of the suspect’s girlfriends, arrived at the police station and offered officers R2 000 for his release.”

She was arrested and charged with trying to bribe police officers.

The outcome of yesterday’s court proceedings was not known at the time of publishing.
