Boy, 11, caught driving log truck on highway

After responding to a report of a timber truck weaving its way through traffic on the John Ross Parkway in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal, members of a security company were amazed to find an 11-year-old boy behind the wheel.

“The call came in around noon on Sunday that the truck was driving erratically and posing a danger to other traffic,” said Corrie Pretorius of Northern Region Protection Services.

Security officers then managed to pull over the driver near some robots and were shocked when the young boy climbed out of the vehicle, Zululand Observer reported.

“He was scarcely able to reach the pedals and had to stand to do so. On top of that, there was no ignition key, and the truck was hot-wired, nor was the load of logs on the back secured in any way,” Pretorius said.

Unable to reach the traffic department, Pretorius then contacted the local flying squad, who soon arrived at the scene followed by a police patrol van.

“The boy said he had driven the truck from the port because the drivers had passed out and was on his way to eSikhaleni,” Pretorius added.

The truck’s owner later arrived on scene, reportedly by taxi, and was questioned by the police.
