Bystander shot dead in violent Eastern Cape robbery
Four armed robbers stormed an Eastern Cape garage, killing a bystander after detonating explosives to raid an ATM.
Police in the Eastern Cape are investigating a violent armed robbery that resulted in the death of one person at a garage on Settlers Way last night.
The Witness reports that, according to Eastern Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, the robbery took place around 23:00.
The incident occurred when four armed robbers entered the premises. Initial reports indicate the perpetrators first accosted two employees in a parked vehicle, forcing them into the shop at gunpoint.
“The victims were robbed of their cellphones and ordered to lie on the floor while the suspects detonated explosives to access the ATM cash,” Gantana says.
Gantana adds that during their escape, the suspects fired shots indiscriminately, killing one bystander with a gunshot to the head.
The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash and remain at large.
“The police have registered a case encompassing charges of murder, two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, contravention of the Explosives Act [15 of 2003] and theft,” says Gantana.
She adds that forensic teams have processed the crime scene.
The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending family notification.
