Cassim to take temporary charge of Eskom
Eskom CFO Calib Cassim is appointed acting group CEO of the struggling power utility.
The sudden departure of outgoing Eskom CEO André de Ruyter left Eskom rudderless this week – but not for long.
This morning, Eskom chief financial officer Calib Cassim, who is no stranger to the Eskom board or the power utility’s challenges, was appointed interim CEO with immediate effect.
De Ruyter, who tendered his resignation in December 2022, was relieved of his duties on Wednesday when he and the Eskom board came to a ‘mutual agreement’ that his notice period would be cut short. He was meant to remain at Eskom until the end of March.

Cassim was appointed as CFO in November 2018, after he initially served as acting CFO from July 2017.
In September, Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan announced a new Eskom board and Cassim remained part of the executive directors, alongside De Ruyter.

Eskom on Monday announced the possibility that stages would be lowered from yesterday morning, but this did not materialise.
