Centurion school worker falls through roof, airlifted to hospital

A maintenance worker at a high school sustained critical injuries while doing work in the roof space of the school hall.

An elderly man was airlifted to a nearby trauma facility in a stable condition after he fell several metres on Friday morning.

The Hoërskool Zwartkop maintenance worker was working in the roof space of the school hall when he fell through the ceiling.

Emergency service Cert SA said in a statement paramedics received the call before 08:00 on Friday.

“On arrival, a man lay on the floor in the school hall, and a number of school personnel had administered first aid,” the statement read.

Cert SA confirmed that the man fell several metres while doing routine maintenance of the roof.

“The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are not clear at this time.”

Emer-G-Med spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said that the man sustained critical injuries.

“He was treated and stabilised on scene before being airlifted with the assistance of the Netcare911 aeromedical helicopter to a specialist facility for the definitive care that he required,” said Van Reenen.
