Chief killed after returning from reed dance

The ANC has urged the public to share any information that might aid the police in finding those responsible for the chief's death.

The prime minister (uNdunankulu) of the Osuthy Royal Council, Dr Dumisani Blassus Khumalo, was shot and killed on Saturday night while returning home from the reed dance at eNyonkeni Royal Palace.

The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal said his death has cast a dark cloud over the reed dance, a ceremony organised by the Zulu royal family for maiden women.

“The ever intelligent and charming Dr Blassus Khumalo was trusted by the departed King. His firmness and clear understanding of how to manage the affairs of the Zulu Royal Family made him INQolobane yeSizwe. An academic giant, we will remember his role in various fields as a historian, a culturist and an influential member of Indonsa Yesizwe Think Tank,” reads a statement from the party.

The ANC has called on people with information to assist the police in catching the people responsible for Khumalo’s death.

“Lastly, this is the time for traditional leaders, religious leaders, thought leaders – leaders of political parties and ordinary members of society across all political lines to unite. We must hold hands and isolate those who are threatening the fragile peace that we achieved over the years of social instability,” reads the statement.

Police have been approached for further details and this story will be updated once more information becomes available.
