Child (3) falls from 12th floor in Joburg, father arrested

The girl fell through a window after her father allegedly left her unattended.

A 37-year-old father has been arrested in Johannesburg after his daughter fell to her death through a window at a block of flats in central Johannesburg.

Police reported that they arrested the man for child negligence at Philadelphia Flats on the corner of Jeppe and Von Wielligh streets on Monday afternoon.

The charge stem from an incident that happened on August 18, when he allegedly left his daughter (3) asleep at the above-mentioned address and went to work. She fell from the 12th floor and was certified dead on the scene at around 19:00 that evening.

Police say an investigation is underway and suspect appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Johannesburg Central Station Commander Brigadier Perumal urged parents not to leave their children unattended.

“This incident could have been avoided if the father left the child with someone else.”
