Child, 4, injured in Alex mall shooting

Twelve people have been injured following a shooting near Pan African shopping mall in Alexandra, in the north of Johannesburg today.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said confirmed that of the 12 injured people, one of them was a four-year-old child, all of whom were taken to various hospitals around Johannesburg, Alex News reported.

The shooting reportedly took place next to the Capitec Bank and the shopping centre.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said officers were on the scene for further investigations.

In a separate incident, two suspects were shot dead and four others were injured following a robbery and shoot-out at Clearwater Mall in Johannesburg, in August.

According to ER24 spokesperson, Russel Meiring, paramedics were called to the scene at about 9:30am.

“When paramedics arrived they found that one man had sustained a fatal gunshot wound while five others had sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious,” he said.

Honeydew Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs confirmed that an armed robbery took place at the Standard Bank at the mall, and that suspects were killed during a shootout with police.

A second suspect later succumbed to his injuries.
