Child (6) killed by alleged drunk driver
A six-year-old child has been killed after she and her father were run over by a driver believed to have been highly intoxicated.
The two were walking to a Montclair shop on Saturday to buy groceries when the incident occurred, Rising Sun Chatsworth reported.
While the father sustained various injuries, including a dislocated shoulder, the preschooler suffered severe head injuries.
Due to the severity of the girl’s injuries, she died at the scene.
The road where the accident occurred was immediately blocked off by community members while they waited for paramedics to arrive.
According to police reports, the 40-year-old driver, believed to be from Pinetown, was detained at the scene.
A breathalyser test was conducted, and it showed positive results.
Police said the woman had been then taken to the district surgeon for her blood to be taken for analysis.
Montclair police communications officer Lieutenant Leopold Jojozi confirmed the accused had spent the remainder of the weekend in the Montclair police station holding cells.
The woman will appear in court soon to face charges of culpable homicide.
Last week, a man was charged with culpable homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol after allegedly running over two pedestrians.
Ekurhuleni Metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said the two had been declared dead on the scene by paramedics after the incident on Sam Molela Drive in Esselen Park, Tembisa.
Another person involved was critically injured in the crash and was taken to Tembisa Hospital.
Kgasago said: “The 42-year-old driver in a Citroën sedan was found to be under the influence of alcohol.”
