Child slain: Angry KZN community seeks justice

Community members gathered outside a police station demanding justice after a man was taken into custody.

The body of a girl, believed to be about 10 years old, was found in Umkomaas, south of Durban, yesterday.

The shocking discovery has angered locals, who are demanding justice be served.

According to several community members, the girl went missing on Sunday.

Locals gathered to search for her throughout the day and night.

A man was arrested yesterday morning after investigations were carried out and the body was found.

Locals ransacked the man’s house and set his belongings alight.

After he was taken into police custody, the community went to the Umkomaas Police Station asking whether or not he was still in custody.

Others asked that he be handed over to them.

At 17:00 yesterday, there was a heavy police presence outside the station, ensuring that the situation remained calm.

“We just want to ensure that this man is kept behind bars as we fear what could happen to our families if someone like this is let out,” said William Hlange, a concerned local.

“We don’t understand how someone can do something like this to a child. All we want is justice.”

More information will be provided once an official police report is received.
