Comrades athlete’s wife killed in crash

Happy Ubisi, employee at Mica Hardware in Phalaborwa, Limpopo, lost his wife in a head-on vehicle accident while en route to the Comrades Marathon.

An oncoming minibus taxi’s tyre burst and collided with his vehicle near Manutsa Park on Thursday afternoon, Letaba Herald reported.

Netitia Ubisi, 26, died in the accident and Happy Ubisi, an athlete from Phalaborwa Road Runners, was taken to a local hospital with injuries to his chest from the impact with the steering wheel and dashboard.

By Friday morning he was yet to be examined, and the extent of his internal injuries had not been established.

The couple got married in December last year. They have two children, a boy and a girl, who are currently in the care of their grandmother. The family will only start making arrangements for the funeral in the coming week.

International runners had already arrived in Durban yesterday. Runners spent the day registering at the Exhibition Centre, while others were warming up ahead of the race on Sunday.

The official route distance for this year’s run is 87.72km along the route and will have about 46 fully stocked refreshment stations, consisting of fruit, energy drinks, energy bars, biscuits, chocolates and cooked potatoes.
