Couple discharged after Wetland Park buffalo attack
Isimangaliso Wetland Park CEO Andrew Zaloumis and his wife have been discharged from hospital after an alleged buffalo attack in the park near St Lucia, KwaZulu-Natal.
The park’s commercial director Terri Castis told The Citizen the buffalo was hiding in a little forest when it was startled during a media tour yesterday at about 10am.
“Zaloumis stood his ground so that people behind him could run for cover. The buffalo was trying to run away when it gashed him with its horns. His wife was gashed on her left thigh,” added Castis.
She said the victims were discharged from Ngwelezana Hospital at about 5pm yesterday after sustaining superficial injuries following the “freak accident”. Zaloumis is expected to be back at work soon.
Earlier this month, a female buffalo was found dead by a group of cyclists in Fourways, north of Johannesburg. It is believed the animal fell off a truck and died from its injuries. The buffalo was burnt and buried by the Johannesburg Lion Park.
JMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the owner of the buffalo has not yet been identified.
CCTV footage posted on Youtube by a Fourways resident, Derek Warren, emerged showing a buffalo roaming on the streets in the early hours of the morning, shortly before it was found dead along Cedar Road in Fourways, Johannesburg
In the video, it is unclear where the buffalo was coming from, but it can be seen wandering in front of the gate of a house on the streets at about 4.39am.
