Couple’s vehicle pelted with rocks in Victoria Bay

A George resident is considering opening a case of attempted murder after his vehicle was pelted with rocks in Victoria Bay on Tuesday (September 22), reports George Herald.

The man and his wife were on their way home after visiting the beach when rocks were thrown at their vehicle from the old railway bridge.

“On our way to the beach, I noticed there were rocks lying in the road near the bridge, but I didn’t really think anything of it. We also saw people there. On our way back, just as we drove under the bridge, we suddenly heard a loud bang,” he said.

One of the rocks smashed the vehicle’s rear window, one hit the roof, while another landed on the boot.

According to the resident, the incident could have had serious consequences had the rocks struck the windscreen or hit him or his wife. He subsequently opened a case of malicious damage to property. 

The incident has also raised concerns among residents and business owners in the area.

The road is used daily by residents, and their guests and clients, and incidents such as this could have an impact on tourism in Victoria Bay.

There is reportedly also significant pedestrian traffic across the old bridge, including people using it as a shortcut to Thembalethu.

The incident comes amid broader concerns about Victoria Bay as a tourist destination, with no restaurant or café facility currently operating at the beach. 

Victoria Bay will host the South African Surf Tour Billabong Junior surf competition from today (September 25) to Sunday (September 27). 

Request for comment regarding the incident have been sent to the George Municipality and the police.
