Covid-19 vaccination: 35 – 49 cohort can now register

As the vaccination roll-out continues across South Africa, a nurse has reminded the next target group of patients aged between 35 to 49 that their vaccination roll-out would only begin on August 1.

The vaccination registration for the next targeted cohort has opened today (July 15), while the roll-out for those registered would only begin on August 1.

Speaking to Rekord at FF Ribeiro (old Tshwane Council Chambers) vaccination site, Sister Rita van der Gryp said the next target group for vaccinations, was encouraged to register on the electronic vaccination data system.

“To register does not mean you will get the vaccine immediately. You will have to wait until the target group vaccinations open in August.”

Van der Gryp said the site’s vaccination target was 200, however, approximately 300 to 420 patients were vaccinated a day, and that booking would be prioritised over walk-ins.

Van der Gryp said the site had also noted many residents coming from beyond the borders of Pretoria seeking jabs.

“We have noted a small influx of patients coming from Johannesburg and other areas,” she said, adding that people should research and visit sites near their homes.

“It is important to use sites close to home, that are continuously being launched by the government.”

She said to assist in nearby vaccination sites, there was a WhatsApp support line: 0600 123456 or Covid-19 hotline: 0800 029 999, that would enable those without access to internet amenities, to receive information.

Van der Gryp said it was essential for patients to keep their vaccination cards as it was vital for follow-up services.

“If you have booked, we will need your vaccination card or SMS. This card contains much-needed information for follow-ups and allowed for quicker pace.

“We are encouraging the eligible groups, especially the elderly, to have breakfast before vaccinating as this is vital. We have not experienced any adverse events, however, we do educate our patients on possible symptoms and what to do if they might experience any.”

Normal symptoms after vaccination included: pain, redness and swelling, tiredness, headaches, muscle pain, chills and a fever, which usually lasted for two to three days.

Tshwane metro was also concerned over the slow up-take in vaccine registrations, partially for those aged 60 and 69.

Health MMC Sakkie du Plooy said: “The metro would like to call on eligible residents to register for vaccination.”

Arthur (97) and Betes (94) along with their son, Andre Horn (66) who were vaccinated at FF Ribeiro clinic, encouraged other eligible members to get vaccinated.

“We believe in the vaccination and strongly support it.”

Andre said the Covid-19 pandemic was disruptive to all.

“My parents have been secluded from society for quite a while, however as their child, I take good care of them and keep them updated.”

He said support was essential for the elderly during the pandemic.

Artist, Tlhalefang Griff who also received his Covid-19 vaccination at FF Ribeiro clinic encouraged eligible members to register and get vaccinated, in order to spare lives.

“My friends and colleagues still remain uncertain on receiving the vaccine.”

He said he hoped that his inoculation, would motivate cynics to get the jab.
