Damaging waves predicted for parts of KZN

Residents in affected areas along the KZN coastline are advised to avoid beachfront activities.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a level 2 warning for damaging waves, set to affect the coastline between Port Edward and Richards Bay today, Zululand Observer reports.

According to the weather desk’s prediction, a cold front, which passed through KZN with high surface, resulted in wave heights of 4m to 6m.

The warning is valid from 01:00 to 20:59 on Saturday, and people living in the KwaDukuza, Mandeni, uMdoni and uMlalazi areas are urged to avoid beachfront activities like swimming, going out to sea, shore and rock angling.

Possible impacts may include:

  • Localised disruptions of harbours and ports for a short period
  • Difficulty navigating small vessels, which could lead to the vessel capsizing
  • Damage to coastal infrastructure
  • Localised damage to, or extensive modification of beaches
