De Ruyter leaves Eskom with immediate effect
A decision to relieve the outgoing CEO of his duties was made by mutual agreement, the power utility says.
Eskom has announced they have parted ways with André de Ruyter.
De Ruyter, who was appointed in December 2019, tendered his resignation in December last year and was set to lead the embattled power utility until later this year.
However, a statement reads that the board and De Ruyter met today and it was agreed to ‘curtail his notice period to February 28’.
But – in further developments – it was decided by ‘mutual agreement’ that the CEO will be relieved of his duties with immediate effect.
“Acting group chief executive arrangements are being finalised with the stakeholder minister and will be communicated shortly,” the statement concludes.

High stages of load-shedding
The timing of his departure is at a time where South Africa’s stage 6 dark days seem to be getting darker. Last night, 7 045MW was shed, despite the country supposedly being in stage 6 of load-shedding. According to Eskom’s website, stage 6 necessitates the shedding of 6 000MW, while stage 7 requires 7 000MW to be cut.

When asked about the speculation that South Africans reached stage 7 – the highest ever implemented – Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha explained that Eskom declares the stage of load-shedding upfront, and that ‘would be any amount in the range declared’.
