Demonstration at Union Buildings against farm attacks

About a hundred people braved the cold on Saturday to demonstrate at the Union Buildings.

Paying tribute to farmers across South Africa who lost their lives during farm attacks, about a hundred people from far and wide came together at the Union Buildings on Saturday (August 14).

Early on the morning, about a dozen bikers met in Montana before joining up with more bikers and motorists in a go-slow demonstration on the highway.

Supporters bore white flags and crosses on their vehicles.

“People came from as far as the Western Cape, and one man walked from Durban with a cross to join us in the demonstration and prayer meeting at the Union Buildings,” said event organiser Kallie Roux.

“Although it was bitterly cold, we are thankful for those that came to show their support.”

This “National Day of Prayer” is aimed to honour people who died in attacks on farms and to raise awareness.

Similar movements took place in other cities across SA, Roux said.

“Thank you so much to those who braved the cold to come kneel with us at the Union Buildings for our Day of Prayer for our farmers, I truly appreciate your involvement,” Roux wrote as thanks on Facebook.

“Thank you to Colonel Steenkamp and his team from the SAPS (POPS) Pretoria who assisted us during the ‘slow-drive’ to the Union Buildings.”

Roux said the next prayer day will be held on September 4 at Ysterberg in Limpopo.

Here, 37 crosses with names of farmers who lost their lives will be planted on the mountain.
