‘Disc-shaped’ explosives found on KZN property

Investigations are under way after nine canisters filled with disc-shaped explosives were discovered on a property in Malvern, KwaZulu-Natal.

Malvern police spokesperson Warrant Officer Radhika Marimuthu said police responded to a call of abandoned explosives yesterday, Highway Mail reported.

“The crime prevention unit members were dispatched to the area, where they found nine canisters filled with disc-shaped explosives. The explosive were then carefully collected and taken to the station,” added Marimuthu.

The explosives were handed over to the police explosives unit.

Investigations are ongoing.

In a separate incident, undetonated explosive devices were found at the Sunningdale Shopping Centre in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal early this month.

It is alleged a security company responding to alarm activation found criminals had broken into the Spar.

The suspects had ripped the alarm out, and the security personnel found a number of undetonated explosives on the safe inside the store, said police.

It is believed the suspects may have been interrupted, or the explosives did not work, but they fled the scene.
