Dobsonville church elder remains behind bars as assault case postponed
A man accused of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old in a Johannesburg township remains in custody as investigators await DNA and toxicology results.
The case against a church elder accused of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old in Dobsonville during Easter has been postponed to July 1 for further investigations.
Roodepoort Record reports the 58-year-old accused appeared briefly in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (May 20), where he continued to abandon his bail application. He was reminded that he can still apply for bail at a later stage in the case.
“The accused is fully aware of his right to apply for bail, but for now, we will abandon the application. He will advise the court when he’s ready to apply,” his defence attorney said.
Outstanding evidence
The court heard that other evidence relevant to the case has been submitted, but investigators are specifically awaiting DNA results, video footage and a toxicology report.
The court also heard that no final decision has been made on whether the case will continue in the regional court or be transferred to the High Court.
Supporters gather outside court
Outside the court, police maintained a presence while supporters from various political parties held placards and demanded justice for the child.
The accused remains in custody.
