Church elder accused of assaulting minor remains behind bars

Supporters gathered outside the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court demanding justice for the 12-year-old victim as the investigation continues.

The case against a church elder accused of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old in Dobsonville during Easter has been postponed to July 1 for further investigations.

The 58-year-old accused appeared briefly in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on May 20, where he continued to abandon his bail application. He was reminded that he can still apply for bail at a later stage in the case.

“The accused is fully aware of his right to apply for bail, but for now, we will abandon the application. He will advise the court when he’s ready to apply,” his defence attorney said.

The court heard that other evidence relevant to the case has been submitted, but they are specifically awaiting DNA results, video footage and a toxicology report.

The court also heard that there’s no final decision on whether the case will continue in the regional court or be transferred to the High Court.

Outside the court, a police presence awaited, along with supporters from various political parties who held placards and demanded justice for the child.
