Police seize drugs hidden in books

A policeman on patrol in the area received a tip-off about a man carrying a bag containing drugs next to the road.

“The officer approached the man and requested to search his bag. During the search, the officer found two books wrapped in decorative paper. Upon opening the books, he discovered a white compressed substance. The officer then asked the man if he knew what the content was,” says Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane.

The man claimed to be homeless and from Springs, saying he had been taken from the street, handed a package, and instructed to deliver it in Mozambique, after which he would proceed to Brazil.

“The substance was confirmed to be crystal meth weighing 1.455kg with an estimated street value of approximately R350 000,” Ndubane explains.

The man is expected to appear in the Barberton Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing charges of possession of drugs.
