‘Drunk driving’ wife charged after husband’s death
A woman has been charged with drunken driving and culpable homicide after she crashed her car in Phoenix, KwaZulu-Natal, which resulted in the death of her husband.
It is alleged 24-year-old Sabrina Sewsanker had crashed her car on the intersection of Redfern Drive and Roundfern Road on Sunday, April 26. Police reportedly found the vehicle on its roof, Phoenix Sun reported.
Her husband, Yathine Sewsanker, had been trapped inside the wreckage. The fire and rescue team were called in to free him, but he was certified dead on scene, having succumbed to severe head injuries. On receiving medical treatment, it was allegedly discovered that Sabrina had been under the influence of alcohol.
According to police reports, a 24-year-old appeared in the Phoenix Magistrates’ Court last week after the death of her husband. She has since been released on bail.
In January, a man was charged with culpable homicide and driving under the influence of alcoholafter allegedly running over two pedestrians in Esselen Park, Tembisa, on the East Rand.
Ekurhuleni Metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said the two were declared dead on the scene by paramedics. Another person involved was critically injured in the crash and was taken to Tembisa Hospital.
The 42-year-old man has since been arrested.
