‘Drunk’ Gauteng cop to face disciplinary hearing

The video shows the officer in full uniform after he allegedly drove into a motorcyclist with his unmarked vehicle in Pretoria.

A Gauteng police officer, filmed yesterday by bystanders who alleged he was drunk, has been arrested, police confirmed in a statement.

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi says they are utterly disappointed by the video of one of their own in full police regalia.

The incident happened in Proclamation Hill, Pretoria West where bystanders and eyewitnesses alleged on social media that the officer was intoxicated.

‘Drunk’ officer gets into the back seat of police van

Gauteng police commissioner Lt-Gen Elias Mawela condemned the incident.

“A criminal case of drunk driving and an internal case in terms of the disciplinary regulations are instituted against the officer, and he will face the consequences of his actions,” says Mawela.

In the video, a police officer is seen being pinned by a bystander to the back of a car. At the same time, a biker believed to have been struck by the officer is seen lying on the ground.

According to bystanders heard speaking on the video, the officer was cornered after he tried to flee the scene.

Police later arrive, and while hiding his face, the cop makes his way into the back seat of the police van.

The question of whether the officer was deployed to the Pretoria West police station or others in Tshwane was not responded to by the Gauteng provincial spokesperson, Captain Mavela Masondo.

By noon on Tuesday, it was not clear whether the officer had appeared in court yet.

All information received will be treated with the strictest confidence.

  • Although the police officer involved has been identified on social media and in several news articles, Caxton Local Media has decided to refrain from doing so until he has appeared in court.
