Durban petrol stations warned of ‘fill up and flee’ motorists

Incidents where motorists refuel their vehicle and drive off without paying seemed to be on the rise this week.

Pinetown Cluster communications officer, Capt Bongumusa Manqele has advised petrol station owners to ensure their CCTV cameras are working.

This warning comes after several motorists fled without paying for their fuel at different stations in the Highway area.

Blue Security operations director and spokesman, Brian Jackson said one of the incidents happened on Wednesday, 24 March.

“A motorist, driving a White Hyundai sedan with ND plates, fuelled up at a Mariannhill Road petrol station before speeding off in the direction of Richmond Road.

“He filled R350 worth of fuel but did not pay for it,” said Jackson. Jackson said when incidents like these occur, the money is usually taken out from the petrol attendant’s salary.

He said there have been similar cases these past few days.

At about 6pm on Saturday, a man in a brown Toyota with NU plates asked for a full tank of petrol station in Kloof.

“He drove off without paying a cent.”

According to Jackson, another incident also took place on Saturday on Old Main Road.

“At about 11pm, a motorist driving a white Toyota, also with NU plates, filled R900 worth of fuel and fled.

“While one honest civilian returned to the petrol station with the money she owed, others did not,” said Jackson.

He added that this has been a trend across KwaZulu-Natal this week.
