E-toll app makes paying easier, says company
“We must be clear: e-tolls have not been scrapped,” said ETC chief executive officer Coenie Vermaak.
Motorists have been urged to make use of a new mobile app designed to make registered e-toll users’ lives easier, Rekord Centurion reports.
The app was designed to let registered users conveniently manage their e-toll accounts, according to ETC chief executive officer Coenie Vermaak.
ETC, the company responsible for managing the Gauteng e-tolling system on behalf of Sanral, urged motorists to remember the e-toll system had not yet been scrapped.
“We must be clear: e-tolls have not been scrapped,” said Vermaak.
This despite the issuing of summonses to non-payers being suspended earlier this year.
“ETC’s view is that scrapping a R25-billion investment and asset, destroying 1 200 direct and another 1 000 indirect job opportunities, is not a viable or sustainable solution.”
However, the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa) have accused Sanral and the ETC of “flogging a dead horse”.
“Why is money still being spent on developing mobile apps when the majority of motorists refuse to pay,” asked Outa chairperson Wayne Duvenage.
“Even if the collection of debt were to be relaunched, the test case for e-tolls had already been damaged by the suspension.”
New updates to the mobile app would allow registered users to take advantage of cashless parking and view frequent user discounts while tracking their monthly spending.
The app allows motorists to view their account balances, top up their mobility accounts, view and download account statements and invoices, view their transaction details and log an enquiry.
In future, users will be able to order their e-tags, register for e-tolls and add or remove vehicles all through the app.
