Ekurhuleni MMC Andile Mngwevu dies in Mozambique floods

Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza is leading tributes after MMC Andile Mngwevu’s death in Mozambique floods was confirmed.

The Office of the Executive Mayor has confirmed the passing of Ekurhuleni MMC for Roads and Transport Planning Andile Mngwevu.

According to Germiston City News, Mngwevu died after the vehicle he was travelling in was swept away by floodwaters in the Chókwè area of Mozambique.

The news of his death came after several days of search efforts in the affected region.

Tributes and condolences

Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza expressed condolences to Mngwevu’s family, confirming that he served as MMC for roads and transport planning and as leader of government business in the City of Ekurhuleni.

In a statement, the mayor described Mngwevu as a committed public servant who played a key role in advancing mobility, infrastructure development and service delivery within the city.

Condolences were extended to Mngwevu’s family, friends and colleagues, as well as the families of three other individuals who were travelling with him during the incident.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, Xhakaza and MMC for Finance Jongizizwe Dlabathi yesterday visited the families of those who died to pay their respects.

City support and wider impact

The City of Ekurhuleni also conveyed sympathies to the people of Mozambique affected by recent flooding, which has caused loss of life and widespread damage.
