Elderly couple rescued from house fire in Durban

The elderly couple were fortunate not to have sustained any injuries when their home went up in flames.

In an early morning rescue mission, an elderly couple were rescued from a raging house fire on Salseete Road in Merebank, a suburb south of Durban.

Dhevan Govindasamy, PT Alarms Tactical Unit spokesperson, said they received a call about a house fire at 06:30. He added that the tactical unit was first to arrive at the scene, shortly followed by the eThekwini Firefighters.

“Concerned about the safety of the occupants, the PT Alarms Tactical officer rushed to remove the aged couple to safety before borrowing a hose pipe from neighbours to attempt to douse the flames. eThekwini Firefighters were swiftly on scene and had the blaze extinguished in no time,” said Govindasamy.

The damage was extensive, yet there were no reported injuries. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
