Emmarentia road rage suspect released as NPA won’t prosecute for now
Authorities are still gathering evidence after a deadly confrontation between motorists in Johannesburg left one man dead and others injured.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has decided not to prosecute the alleged shooter in Sunday’s road rage incident in Emmarentia, Johannesburg, at this stage.
According to Northcliff Melville Times, NPA spokesperson Abram Mohlatlole said: “After careful consideration of the evidence of the alleged road rage incident, we have decided not to proceed with the matter.”
Suspect released, probe continues
The suspect, who faced charges of murder and attempted murder, was released by police today, according to Mohlatlole. The matter remains subject to further investigation, and Mohlatlole said it will be revisited at a later stage when sufficient evidence is available.
Incident details
The newspaper previously reported that Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said police were investigating a case of murder and attempted murder.
Nevhuhulwi said the incident stemmed from an alleged road rage confrontation between two drivers that escalated into violence.
It is alleged that the incident began as a minor bumper-bashing and then escalated into deadly violence that left one man dead and two others injured.
Nevhuhulwi said it is alleged that a female passenger, believed to be the wife of one of the drivers, fetched a firearm from their vehicle. The second driver also produced a firearm, resulting in the shooting.
“The husband was killed in the incident, while the other driver sustained minor injuries. The female passenger was taken to hospital after suffering a gunshot wound.”
Video shows aftermath
An unsettling video shows the aftermath of the fatal shooting.
In the footage, a young boy and his sister are seen being guided into a vehicle for safety after the boy attempted to administer CPR to a critically injured man believed to be his father. The mother is also shown in the video, sitting injured from her gunshot wounds. The video concludes with a crowd gathering along Barry Hertzog Road, where the incident took place.
Police have urged the public not to circulate the video while investigations continue.
