Eskom security officer shot during cable installation in Tshwane
The security guard was shot in the back and his firearm taken from him.
A security guard that was shot and wounded in Mapobane outside Pretoria has Eskom fearing for its workers amid growing attacks on them while they are trying to do their jobs.
According to Mapobane SAPS spokesperson, Rainier Langeveldt, the attack took place when Eskom workers were installing a cable next to two houses on Tuesday morning.
“One of the security guards was jumped by two men. One of the men shot the security officer in the back while the other took his firearm.
“The two suspects then fled the scene,” says Langeveldt.
The security guard was rushed to a nearby medical facility where he was treated for a gunshot wound and discharged the following day.
Eskom Safety, Health, Environment, Quality and Security Manager in Gauteng, Kith Maitisa, says it’s worrying that Eskom workers are being attacked while doing their work.
“It is concerning that our employees now require to be escorted while carrying out their duties to ensure that a reliable supply of electricity is provided to the communities,” she says.
“While we condemn this violent behaviour meted out against our employees and urge communities to refrain from such acts of criminality, we are grateful that this incident did not result in loss of life and that our colleague is at least recovering at home.”
The case is still under investigation. No arrests have been made yet.
