An investigation by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is under way into a fatal hostage drama in Evander in Mpumalanga, while the court matter against the accused has been moved to October 2.

Mlamuli Siyaya (38) faces charges of murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition following the incident at a rental facility on May 12, reports the Ridge Times.

According to IPID, three people were allegedly held hostage at the property, including Siyaya’s girlfriend, her sister and another man.

The girlfriend was allegedly shot and killed by Siyaya during the police operation. Her sister managed to contact police and escape unharmed.

The other man, who was also allegedly being held hostage, was fatally shot by police when he reportedly tried to flee the residence. He was declared dead at the scene.

IPID is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the police shooting.

Siyaya was allegedly injured at the scene before being airlifted to Mediclinic Sandton for treatment, and was later discharged from hospital.

He is now paralysed and uses a wheelchair as a result of the injuries.

Siyaya was granted R500 bail by the Evander Magistrate’s Court on July 22. He appeared in court again on September 2, when the matter was postponed to October.
