Explosive found in Fourways a practice grenade – police

An unused hand grenade was reportedly found by residents at a complex in Norscot, near Fourways, in the north of Johannesburg on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Balan Muthan confirmed a grenade had been found and added it was a practice hand grenade that posed no danger to anyone.

“Even if the pin was pulled [the grenade] would not have went off,” he said.

Muthan said police were investigating where the grenade had come from.

Practice grenades are used in training and simulations, and are generally harmless.

According to a representative from Douglasdale police, there were no known cases of grenades being used in house robberies in the area, Fourways Review reported.

Over the past few months, numerous explosives have been discovered in Gauteng.

In October, police discovered about 30 explosive devices – including grenades and mortar bombs – near a shallow dam in Bultfontein, in the north of Pretoria.

Earlier that week, two military projectiles and one mortar were found near the Pretoria West High School.

Police were alerted after two men, spotted by the school’s security guard, fled the scene, leaving behind a bag of explosives.
