Father and daughter arrested for drunk driving during KZN roadblock
A drunk driving arrest in Mtubatuba took an unexpected turn when a father called his daughter for help, only for police to discover she was also over the legal alcohol limit.
A father and daughter were arrested for drunk driving in Mtubatuba on Saturday night after a bid to avoid detention backfired.
KZN MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, said the father was initially arrested during a roadblock operation under the #NenzaniLaEzweni campaign, Zululand Observer reports.
After his arrest, he contacted his daughter to come and collect him.
However, upon her arrival, law enforcement officers discovered that she was also driving under the influence of alcohol and promptly placed her under arrest.
“The RTI team deployed to clean up our road networks in Mtubatuba is executing #NenzaniLaEzweni with precision. The team remains firm and determined to reduce road fatalities. We also thank SAPS for strengthening and supporting our operations in the area,” said Duma.
Duma further revealed that 28 motorists were arrested during Saturday night’s operation alone.
Those arrested included two soldiers, two mechanics, three taxi drivers, two truck drivers, four teachers, one bank teller, and a fisherman who allegedly attempted to offer fish to RTI officers, which was declined.
In total, 45 motorists have been arrested in Mtubatuba over the past two days as authorities intensify efforts to curb drunk driving and improve road safety.
