An angry mob picketed outside the Springs Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, demanding that a 58-year-old father, who allegedly raped his 24-year-old daughter with special needs for over 18 years, be denied bail.

The matter was reported to the police on October 14.

The victim was taken to Kwa-Thema Clinic where a medical report revealed there was recent penetration. They later moved her to the Tsakani Victim Support Centre.

It is alleged the father started raping her when she was six years old. She reportedly told her mother, who confronted him, but he allegedly assaulted her and threatened their lives.

The mother later moved out and filed for divorce. She died in 2009, leaving the victim with her aunt, who died in July 2020.

She was then forced to return to her father, as he was her only surviving guardian. It is alleged the suspect started sexually violating her, especially when he was drunk, and threatened her life if she disclosed this to anyone.

During the bail application, the investigating officer argued against the suspect being granted bail as it is feared he might fail to adhere to the conditions.

In addition, his life might be in danger at his home in Kwa-Thema. It was further argued it might also not be safe if he moved to his relatives in Tsakani.

Residents submitted a petition pleading for the court to deny the suspect bail. The suspect’s defence argued the only issue he had with his daughter was over her disability grant.

The victim now lives with neighbours, who offered to accommodate her as there are no other relatives to take her in.

The bail application was postponed until November 27.
