Final reports awaited in case of 3 Free State constables found in Hennops River

Police continue a detailed investigation into the police officers who ended up in a Centurion river while travelling from Bloemfontein to Limpopo.

SAPS has confirmed that the investigation into the deaths of Constables Keamogetswe Buys (30), Boipelo Senoge (20) and Cebekhulu Linda (24), whose bodies were recovered from the Hennops River in Centurion, Gauteng, earlier this year, is still underway.

Bloemfontein Courant reports this is in collaboration with SAPS and private specialists who have submitted reports as prescribed. According to national police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, although preliminary post-mortem reports have been received, the final reports — which will include blood alcohol results, toxicology and histology — are still in progress. These results are needed before the investigation can be concluded.

“Analysis of physical evidence is still underway. This process is complex as the SAPS relies on external specialists for certain examinations. While the SAPS accident expert report has been finalised, it is not in itself conclusive. The outcome of this investigation depends on a combination of all expert findings,” she says.

SAPS is unable to provide a timeframe for the completion of the investigation at this stage.

Commitment to thorough investigation

“What can be confirmed is that the matter is progressing and all necessary expertise is being applied to ensure a thorough and credible outcome. The South African Police Service remains committed to finalising this investigation with the required diligence, mindful of the sensitivity of the case for the families, colleagues and the public.”

Honouring the fallen officers

SAPS held a joint memorial service at Bobbies Park in Bloemfontein on 6 May to honour the lives of the three young officers whose tragic deaths shook the police service and the nation. The constables went missing in April while travelling from Bloemfontein to Limpopo, where they had been deployed. Following an intense investigation and search by the police, their remains were among five bodies retrieved from the Hennops River in Centurion.
