First commemorative service in memory of Indian soldiers

A highlight was when the official handed over medals to the Naidoo family, whose late father served in World War 2 in the Cape and Malay Corps during 1939 to 1944 in East Africa.

The South African Indian Legion of military veterans, together with the City of Johannesburg, held its first commemorative service in memory of Indian soldiers, who contributed to military service to the republic of South Africa from the Anglo Zulu War of 1879, Anglo Boer War, World War 1 and 2 and post great wars, recently.

Attending the event in Johannesburg was legionnaire, Robin Kistan from Verulam, who lay a wreath on behalf of the SAS Naval Jalsena Association and Mr Sagie Moonsamy from Chatsworth, who lay a wreath on behalf of the South African Indian Legion KwaZulu-Natal branch.

Mr Sagie Moonsamy is also the KwaZulu-Natal South African Indian Legion public relations officer.

The event was attended by senior officials of the City of Johannesburg, the Assistant Defence Attaché of India, Master W/O Vakas Singh Tomar and Assistance Defence Attaché of Indonesia among other senior military veterans and dignitaries.
