Former cop accused of murdering ex-girlfriend appears in KZN court
The ex-boyfriend of a woman who allegedly shot her in the face with a SAPS-owned gun is due to again appear in court on March 20.
Calvin Schoeman, who is charged with the murder of his ex-girlfriend Tanya Oakes (25), made a brief appearance in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
Schoeman, a former Pietermaritzburg policeman, allegedly murdered Oakes in 2021.
He was summoned to court in February but made his first appearance in the dock on Friday.
It is alleged that Oakes was shot in the face with a SAPS-owned firearm and her body was then driven in her father’s bakkie and left outside Northdale Hospital’s casualty ward.
During court proceedings, the state furnished the defence with statements.
The matter was adjourned to March 20 for both parties to consult.
Meanwhile, outside the court, Oakes’ family members, friends and community members gathered in their numbers calling for justice for the mother of one.
They carried placards and chanted as they stood outside the court.
Craig Freese, public relations officer for Men Fighting Against Domestic Abuse (Mfada) said: “We as Mfada are pleased with the public prosecutor’s handling of the case as the matter was adjourned for consultation.”
