Four life sentences for couple’s murderers
The three men who were found guilty of murdering an elderly Glen Marais couple in Kempton Park were together sentenced to four life sentences.
The men were sentenced by Judge Majeke Mabesele at Randburg High Court on Thursday, Kempton Express reported.
Kenneth Mojela, 24, was sentenced to 15 years and two life sentences; Thabo Oupa Mphahlele, 27, received 18 years and two life sentences; and Ntwape Elvis Koketso Thobejane, 25, received 15 years’ imprisonment.
The trio brutally killed Pikkie, 75, and Rina Stassen, 74, in their Jacobus Street home on August 19, 2013.
A fourth man, Howard Sekwati, 27, was found guilty on a charge of receiving stolen goods and will spend 12 months behind bars.
Mabesele said DNA samples of Mojela, Thobejane and Mphahlele matched DNA found at the murder scene.
Thobejane and Mphahlele took police to Sekwati’s house after their arrest. There the police found a TV, DVD player and computer belonging to the Stassens.
Kempton Police Station commander, Brigadier Bertha Kgoroba, applauded Detective Warrant Officer Kgomotso Dinyane and the team of detectives, who played a significant role in ensuring criminals who commit such acts of violence, especially on vulnerable citizens, were put in jail for life.
On Monday, an elderly couple survived an attack by house robbers in Ramsgate, KwaZulu-Natal.
The 72-year-old man is said to be in a stable condition at Margate Hospital after he was shot twice during a house robbery.
Police said a case of house robbery has been opened, while the two suspects are still at large. No arrests have been made.
