Free State school mourns matriculant’s death

On the eve of a new chapter of his life, a Grade 12 learner tragically lost his life in a drowning incident.

A tragedy unfolded at the Smilin Thru Resort outside Parys on Saturday, when a matriculant from Boiphihlelo Secondary School in Mokwallo drowned in the Vaal River.

Police divers found Lefa Petrus Rampuru’s body on Sunday morning.

A group of 103 matric learners, accompanied by school management, teachers, and School Governing Board members, are staying at Smilin Thru for the duration of the matric exams to study for their finals.

The incident happened during a lunch break.

They called for help immediately, but police divers’ search on Saturday was in vain.

The search resumed on Sunday.

Rampuru was the youngest of four children and lived in Mokwallo.
