As motorists queue at various service stations across Zululand and KZN, there are growing fears of a fuel shortage in the coming days.
This as one of South Africa’s largest crude oil refineries declared a force majeure on Tuesday, suspending operations as a result of the unrest.
The South African Petroleum Refineries (Pty) Ltd (SAPREF), a joint venture between Shell and BP, said it is unable to operate with some major routes closed.
‘Without the said critical materials, and with no clarity as to how long the unrest will last and normal supply resume, SAPREF is unable to sustain refinery operations.
‘Consequently, SAPREF has been obliged to make the difficult decision to shut down the refinery,’ it said in a communique to customers.

The real unrest in South Africa will start when service stations run out of fuel. And that will be sooner than later.
