Full-term foetus found in Witbank dumpsite

Witbank police discovered a full-term baby with the placenta still attached to it, smothered in a black plastic bag at a dumpsite over the Easter weekend.

“When police arrived at Leeuwpoort dumpsite, they found the fully grown baby boy in a black bag. We were informed that the rubbish truck that had offloaded the waste had stopped at a clinic in eMalahleni and then made its route through the city picking up general waste,” police spokesperson Sergeant Marius Etsebeth said.

The baby, found on April 3, was one of three aborted foetuses discovered over the Easter weekend, with the two other foetuses discovered at the Paxton dumpsite, Witbank News reported.

This after police recently held an operation along with the community to remove the large number of posters advertising illegal abortions in the town’s CBD.

“Most of the foetuses found on the dumpsites are from these illegal abortions. There are over 300 posters littering downtown, advertising the abortions,” said Etsebeth.

Estebeth added “doctors“ who carried out illegal abortions mostly used knitting needles to damage the placenta before forcing the foetus to move down before it is removed.

“A number of mothers have passed away due to septicaemia [septic shock]. This is from having an illegal abortion,” Estebeth added.

In March, two discarded foetuses were discovered in Alexandra, in the north of Johannesburg on the same day.

The first foetus was discovered by a street vendor near a water and sewage manhole. It is believed the foetus emerged from a damaged water and sewage main due to rain in the area. Later that day, a rubbish collector discovered another foetus inside a plastic bag behind public toilets
