Garden Route ranked world’s top road trip

Clear skies and coastal views have earned an iconic scenic route from Mossel Bay to Storms River a score of 90.6/100 in a UK study.

The Garden Route has outperformed popular international routes to be named the best driving experience globally in a recent study by Autotrader UK

South Africa’s scenic stretch between Mossel Bay and Storms River beat the United States’ Route 66 and Pacific Coast Highway to claim the top spot with a score of 90.6/100.

The global study, conducted in partnership with British Weather Services senior meteorologist Jim Dale, assessed routes that most reliably deliver the ideal climate conditions – or, to paraphrase Autotrader UK, the kind of weather that helps make a drive feel truly perfect.

The study found that this stretch of road ‘consistently delivers what we all dream of when we hit the road’.

“Clear skies for most of the year, which give drivers the opportunity to take in the views of the Indian Ocean Coast, gentle winds and comfortable temperatures. The Garden Route takes you from ocean to forest to mountains and is as close to perfect as driving weather gets.”

South African National Parks (SANParks) spokesperson JP Louw says the road quality, scenery and weather conditions helped clinch the result. Louw says the Garden Route National Park is at the heart of this journey.

“The Wilderness Section, located along the N2, is known for its calm waterways, birdlife and outdoor activities such as canoeing and mountain biking,” says Louw.

He adds that the Knysna section offers access to estuarine environments and the endangered Knysna seahorse at Thesen Island, while the Tsitsikamma section features the rugged coastal scenery of Storms River Mouth.

“The Garden Route National Park remains a key part of this internationally recognised route, offering diverse landscapes where forests, rivers, mountains and coastline meet,” says Louw.

He encourages visitors to experience the globally recognised journey and the national park that forms part of it.
