Gauteng couple appear in court on murder charges

The couple are acussed of killing a man and burning his body, whereafter the woman allegedly claimed life policies.

Sibusiso Mahlangu (33) and Lerato Mahlangu (32), accused of murder, defeating the ends of justice and fraud, yesterday made another appearance in the Soshanguve Magistrate’s Court outside Pretorian.

The matter was remanded to May 18 for a formal bail application, according to NPA Tshwane spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana.

According to Mahanjana, it is alleged that on January 2, 2022, the Soshanguve couple murdered a man and burned his body in their house in Block HH, Soshanguve.

“Thereafter, it is further alleged that the wife, Lerato, obtained a fraudulent death certificate from Home Affairs, claiming that her husband Sibusiso, died in the fire and later claimed life policies.”

Pretoria Rekord recently reported that a Soshanguve man, reported to have died in a house fire, had been arrested in a stolen car.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo says Sibusiso was arrested in Hammanskraal following a police tip-off about a potentially stolen car.

Mahanjana adds that when Sibusiso was being processed following his arrest, it was discovered that he was registered as deceased.

Sibusiso will appear in the Hammanskraal Magistrate’s Court on May 29 to face a charge of possession of a stolen vehicle.
