Gauteng premier condemns tavern killings seen on the weekend

David Makhura said incidents in which innocent people are killed "like animal" cannot be allowed.

Gauteng premier, David Makhura has condemned the mass shooting tavern incidents which left 15 people dead and eight injured at Nomzamo informal settlement, in Orlando East, over the weekend.

Two more were killed and four were injured in a similar incident in Katlehong, in Ekurhuleni, during the weekend.

In an official statement issued by Vuyo Mhanga, spokesperson of Makhura, the premier said: “We cannot allow incidents like this; where innocent people are killed like animals.

“This kind of behaviour has no place in this province.”

“It is reported that in the early hours of Sunday, July 10, 2022, a group of men armed with rifles and 9mm pistols entered the tavern and started shooting randomly at the patrons in Orlando East.

“Twenty-three (23) people were shot, 13 of whom were declared dead on the scene, while 10 were rushed to a nearby hospital.

“Three (3) more were later declared dead at the hospital.

“In Katlehong, four gunmen reportedly entered the Mputlane Inn Tavern on Friday night and began shooting randomly at patrons as well.

“Six people were shot, two died at the scene and two were taken to hospital,” Makhura said.

On behalf of the Gauteng provincial government, Makhura extended condolences to all the families of those who lost their loved ones and wishes a speedy recovery for those who are injured.

“We condemn, in the strongest terms possible the senseless killing of so many people.

“We call on the law enforcement agencies to leave no stone unturned to ensure that the perpetrators are arrested and brought to book,” said Premier Makhura.

He said the provincial government was deeply shocked, concerned, and saddened by this brutal assassination of innocent residents.
