George duo remains in custody over brutal attack on 83-year-old man

A man was found bound and injured a day after he was attacked in his home.

Two Blanco, George, residents, Melvin van Wyngaardt (26) and Roselene Pietersen (32), remain behind bars following their appearance in the George Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

George Herald reports that they are accused of assaulting an 83-year-old man and carrying out a violent robbery at his farmhouse on the R404 near George Airport on Friday, September 5.

According to the Southern Cape Police’s spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies, the victim returned home that evening to find the suspects in his bedroom. They allegedly tied his hands and feet up with shoelaces, threw him to the ground and kicked him repeatedly before making off with some groceries, cellphones, personal belongings and a shotgun.

The victim was only discovered the next afternoon when a neighbour spotted him tied up inside the house. He was transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

Both accused abandoned their bail application and will be back in court on Monday, November 3.

The case was postponed for further investigation.
