Grayston bridge collapse delays Joburg traffic

The City of Johannesburg on Thursday urged motorists to use public transport or alternative routes as the M1 remains closed following the Grayston bridge collapse which killed three people and injured 23 in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

Early morning traffic was affected on Thursday resulting to heavy delays and the closure of roads. Some of the routes proposed by the city include the N1, Rivonia Road, Jan Smuts and Louis Botha.

Reports indicate that road closures in Sandton, which form part of the Ecomobility Festival, will be temporarily lifted to ease traffic caused by the M1 bridge

collapse, Sandton Chronicle reported.

The remains of the collapsed bridge had not yet been completely removed.

Following yesterday`s incident, The Gautrain Management Agency has offered to operate their bus service free of charge.

“Following the collapse onto the M1, The Gautrain Management Agency has decided to operate our bus service free of charge for tomorrow only,” Gautrain Tweeted.

“Morning peak trains on P-Line will be 8car trains. Our sympathies to the families of the deceased & we wish those injured a speedy recovery.”

Infrastructure Services and Environment MMC Matshidiso Mfikoe on Thursday morning said the M1 freeway would hopefully be re-opened by lunchtime.

Meanwhile, President Jacob Zuma extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. “The President further wished those who were injured during the accident a speedy recovery. He has directed the authorities to swiftly investigate the cause of the accident,” said Zuma.

The president has also urged construction companies to “always take necessary precautions to protect workers and the public during the construction phases to avoid such tragic accidents”.
